Široki Brieg was called Lištica during the post-World War II Yugoslavia period, the name being actually the name of the surrounding valley.
Željko Heimer, 14 November 1999
The symbols of Široki Brieg are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Široki Brieg (text), adopted in 1998 by the Municipal Council and published in the Municipal official gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Široki Brieg.
The flag is vertically divided blue-wite-blue, the central field being wider, and includes the coat of arms. It seems that the blue in the coat of arms used separately is lighter than the blue used in the flags.

The coat of arms is "Azure a two-towered church argent and the chief gules fimbriated also argent". The top of the
shield has two rectangular indentations.
The color coding is given on the Chromoton scale, proprietary to the
Zagreb dye company Chromos as:
- cinnabar red: 200;
- cobalt blue: 400;
- silver;
- black.
The church is the Franciscan church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.
