Description of the flag

Steenokkerzeel (10,000 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Halle-Vilvoorde.

The original name of the city was Hockensala (1057), and Steen was added for castle. One of the most famous inhabitants of this castle was Charles de Lannoy, general and diplomat of Emperor Charles V, and Viceroy of Naples. Five of his eight children were born in Steenokkerzeel. In 1929-40, Empress Zita, widow of Charles I of Austria, with her family (with a.o. archiduke Otto von Hapsburg) stayed here.

The flag is: Gules, at the hoist the right lower quarter of a disk Argent, at the fly the left lower quarter of a disk Or. Proportions are 2:3.

The flag is derived from the municipal coat of arms.

The flag was adopted on 1 July 1986.
