About the Flag

The company was established in 1970 and is today one of the biggest containership companies in the world. In Germany it was represented by F.H. Bertling until 30 June 2006. Since then there exists Mediterranean Shipping Co. Germany GmbH at Willy-Brandt-Str.49, Hamburg. In February 2007 the company ran worldwide 326 container vessels having more than 1,000,000 TEUs. I spotted this flag on top of companies building on 21 March 2007. In the age of corporate identity I think, that it is not only the flag of the German branch. The funnel is more or less the same as the flag. There are two small black stripes at the top end. It is a yellow flag with a black roundel in its centre. In the roundel is a yellow wavy line topped by a yellow "m" and bottomed by yellow "sc".

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. was formed 1970 in Italy, later moving the H.Q. to Switzerland [by 1980 at least], and is a privately owned company of the Aponte family. The flag is yellow with a black circle bearing their logo in yellow of an "m" standing on a wavy line above the letters "sc" as seen as the logo at http://www.mscgva.ch. A slightly different version is shown by Brown 1995 in which the wavy line is positioned between the two levels of letters with no indication found that this version of the logo was used. There is also a subsidiary, MSC Crociere S.A. trading as MSC Cruises or Mediterranean Shipping Cruises having been established in Naples in 1987. Their flag is white with the logo in a very dark blue placed on a white circle on a dark blue and white compass rose while a photo of their "MSC Sinfonia" dressed overall in 2005 shows alternate flags of this flag with a white field and a dark blue reversed colours version being displayed in banner form i.e. attached via their chief. An alternate version proper may therefore exist.
