Description

Bernau is in Barnim county to the northeast of Berlin (approx. 20,000 inhabitants). The flag is green-white-red with the arms in the white stripe. Source: Günther 1995 (Erwin Günther, Ostdeutsche Stadtflaggen (1): Land Brandenburg, in Der Flaggenkurier, no. 1, 1995).

From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, known since 1347. The eagle is the eagle of Brandenburg, the bear is canting. The tree originally was a linden tree and is either a symbol of justice, or for the forests in the area.

Literature: Bensing et al. 1984.
