Flag adopted 6 Jun 1962
From Ralf Hartemink's
site: Additions: 1974 Eutzen, Gannerwinkel, Knesebeck, Lüben, Radenbeck,
Wollerstorf, Zasenbeck
Origin/Meaning: Wittingen was already mentioned as a city in the 14th
century and the city became a possession of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg.
The oldest known seal dates from 1369 and shows already a gate with the
lion of the dukes. Later seals show either only a lion, or a building with
the lion, the size and shape of the building has changed considerably during
the centuries. The above design dates from the 19th century.
Literature : Stadler, K. : Deutsche Wappen - Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
Angelsachsen Verlag, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
