Ballenstedt is a small town in Quedlinburg County just north of the Harz mountains. The coat of arms is derived from the arms of the Ascanians who came from the area of Ballenstedt. The helmet, mantling and crest ought to be black and yellow, but for better visual distinction dark red is used instead of black in the flag. Source: Günther 1996a.
