Obernai is a city of c 10,000 inhabitants, located in the northernmost part of the Alsatian wine-growing area.

The first mention of the place dates back to 778, as Ehineim, after the river Ehn which waters the city. It was a property of the Duke of Alsace Etichon, the father of the saint patroness of Alsace St. Odile.

The city is surrounded by vineyards. It is a typical Alsatian city with several ancient houses and buildings, including the former wheat hall (1554), the Chapel Tower (XIIIth century) and a six-bucket well (1579).

The Kronenbourg brewery is located in Obernai.
