Presentation of the city

Bonneville is a city of ca. 10,000 inhabitants, mostly an administrative center. It was founded in 1290 as a free tax, new capital city called la bonne ville by Beatrix of Faucigny.

The city was in the past a fortified city, but the invaders from Bern destroyed the fortress in 1589.

Bonneville is now a sous-préfecture of the department of Haute-Savoie, with c. 10,000 inhabitants. In 1961, Bonnevile absorbed the neighbouring municipality of Pontchy, expanding its area from 1,555 to 2,232 ha.

The municipal logotype of Bonneville shows the bridge over the river Arve, decorated with two flags of Savoy and two flags horizontally divided yellow-red-yellow-red.
A representative of the municipality of Bonneville stated that:

  • the flag with the horizontal stripes is only used on the municipal logo and not as a municipal flag;
  • the municipality flies the flag of Faucigny.
