The emblem was chosen from a nationwide competition on 22 November 1959. The winner was Senichiro Tsunoda/Kakuda/Sumida(?) of Sendai. In the form of stylised kanji Ko- 小 (small) and daira 平 (even, flat, peace), the stability of Kodaira city is expressed by the thickness of the line(s), and peace, harmony and wholehearted development by both wings/flanks.
