The emblem was the one chosen as the Mitaka town emblem as the result of a public competition on 18 August 1942. It consists of three concentric arcs, with a figure of a hawk at the bottom completing the circle. The three arcs signify the three Edo period jurisdictions in the Mitaka area: Setagaya, Nogata and Fuchuu. The hawk indicates a place of hawks during the Edo period. The emblem combines the mi 三 (three) and taka 鷹 (hawk) of Mitaka in a circle, a design hoping for the people's peace and harmony.
