The badge appeared as an amendment to the 1889 Admiralty Flag Book. Amendment slip printed November 1895, issued 5 June 1896. Obsolete 1900.

1885. Niger Districts Protectorate was established by Britain in the delta of the River Niger. 1891. Re-named the Oil Rivers Protectorate.

1893. Extended and re-named Niger Coast Protectorate.

1900. Combined with southern portion of the territory of the former Royal Niger Company to form the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria.

Although the badge appeared in a flag book in 1896, the protectorate was not transferred from the Foreign Office to the Colonial Office until 1899. This suggests that the badge was used for only a very short time, or perhaps not at all.
