Akkrum village
Akkrum is a village in Boarnsterhim municipality in Fryslân. It was
the seat of the former municipaity of Utingeradeel, along the railway Leeuwarden-Zwolle.
The American millionaire F. Cooper (1843-1904) of Chicago was born in Akkrum
as Folkert Kuipers; he founded "Coopersburg", a home for the elderly in
Akkrum.
Nickname: "skytstuollen" - s***chairs (in olden days babies were put
on those things).
Akkrum: CoA: in red three golden clover-leaves, placed two, one; on
top of the shield a crown with five leaves of the same.
This CoA occurs in the "Ackrumer Friesche Boere Almanack", 1671.
Flag: two vertical stripes of red and yellow proportioned 2:1; in the
red stripe a yellow crown with three leaves.
The crown is a "vlekke-kroon" - Akkrum was a "vlek" (townlet),
in size between a town and a village .
