Tiel is in the heart of the Betuwe, West Gelderland, famous for jam making. The city is one of the oldest Dutch cities, founded between 850-1100.
The flag was adopted 9 June 1954, derived from the municipal CoA; as an old Hansa town it had the right to put the double imperial eagle on the flag, but someone forgot to do so. In the Carolingian time Tiel was a 'Villa Regis' (a royal town) - so it had more more than one reason.
