Zaanstad municipality

Zaanstad is a merger of the former municipalities of Assendelft, Krommenie, Westzaan, Wormerveer, Zaandam, and Zaandijk (1 Jan 1974), although the municipal flag seems to have been in use by Zaandam since 1967. On 1 Jan 2002 Zaanstad had 137.667 inhabitants.
The Zaanstad flag is derived from the oldest known flag of Zaandam (1667).
