Although "stad" = town, this village was probably never a town;
in this case "stad" is better translated as "place" or "stead".
The Haringvliet is one of the wide river-arms which form the Holland delta.
The village has now c. 1400 inhabitants. It is on the former island of
Overflakkee, which since the 18th century became one island with Goeree:
Goeree-Overflakkee. In the last part of the last century the island became
part of the "Delta-Plan", by which it became connected by road to the mainland
of Holland, Brabant and Zeeland. It is c. 55 km southwest of Rotterdam.
Stad aan 't Haringvliet was a separate municipality till 1966, when it
became part of Middelharnis.
