About the flag

Köping is a town situated in Västmanland and in the County of Västmanland in Sweden. The flag is a banner of the arms, as for all Swedish municipalities. In practice, the arms of the cross are often a bit outbent at the ends.

The image dates back to a seal for the town, known since at least 1378 – it was used on a letter dated 15 October 1378, which now is kept in the Swedish National Archives. Originally the cross had the letter K beside it (on the heraldic left side; for the name of the town) but this was removed, as it is not in accordance with good heraldry, when the arms were confirmed in a royal grant of the 8th of November, 1940.
