[Dimashq Province (Syria)] 2:3
by Dirk Schönberger

Introduction

Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website shows the flag of the Muhafazah (province) of Dimashq (Damascus) and Al Hasakah. The source given is 'Bacci'. I wonder if the Damascus flag is intended for vertical hoisting — i.e. with the depicted building looking the right side up.

'Bacci' is a (snail) mail contact of my co-author Falko Schmidt in Administrative Divisions of the World, living in Argentina. The source consists of several photocopies showing the flags.

Here is a scan of the original source. You see that the symbol is drawn upright, but there is drawn a flag staff at the top of the flag. The caption below the flag drawing reads "FLAG OF DAMASCUS MOUHAFAZAT (PROVINCE)" in hand written Latin letters.

On the flag itself, the inscription is Dimashq el-Asad (Damascus the Lion, Assad being also the name of the Syrian president). I believe it shows the great mosque of Damascus.
