From left to right: Chia (to praise), Yi (good
deeds) and then city. I know this place well, my home town. A long time ago
during the Ching dynasty there was a rebellion. The people in the area helped
the dynasty to suppress the rebellion. So the Emperor "praised the good
deeds folks here did" and changed the name to Chia-yi. It's original name
is "Ju-lo." This is the county where the Tropic of Cancer passes.
