Alameda County was founded June 6, 1853. There was not a flag for 137 years, until June 14, 1990 when, under the leadership of the late County Supervisor Charles Santana, the present flag was designated as Alameda County’s official flag. The Alameda County flag was designed at the request of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors by artist Ben Hazard, a member of Alameda County Art Commission. A striking design in blue, golden yellow and black on a field of white, the flag’s design is intended to suggest some of Alameda County’s outstanding physical features: the bright sunrise, rolling hills and sparkling Bay waters. The five vertical stars on the right border of the flag represent the County’s five supervisory districts.
