The Denison flag is believed to have been adopted by the city council in 1872 although minutes of the 1872 council have not been located. The flag has a green and white background with red and black stripes and a star in the center. Its meaning, according to Jack R. Maguire of Austin, who has done research on the flag is: "The green represents the grass of the Indian Territory (which was very tall and lush in 1872) and the white represents the snowy cotton fields of Texas, divided by the red stripe (Red River) and crossed by the black stripe (representing the railroad). The star is the city of Denison, a jewel at the crossing of a great river and at the interweaving of two great parts of the country."
