Word " bandeira "

Word:
bandeira
Script:
Latin
Etym. family:
*band-

Remarks:

While "bandeira" is written identically by some 200 million users of the Portuguese language, within a 100 km radius of my present location I could hear it pronounced in some five clearly distinct ways (in IPA: [βɑ̃ˈδɑi̯ɾɑ], [bãˈdei̯ɾa], [bɑ̃ˈdeɾɑ], [βɑ̃ˈδei̯ɾɑ], and [βɑ̃ˈδei̯ʀɑ]). And of course this happens with most languages.

Word " estandarte " (="standard")

Word:

"Estandarte" is an ambiguous word and has misleading usage outside vexillological terminology; all relevant semantics fully covered by "bandeira".
António Martins, 11 Aug 2007

"Estandarte" is widely used as a (pretentious, literary or "poetic") synonym for flag.
Jorge Candeias, 11 Aug 2007
